While all blackout blinds appear to be the same at first glance, there is one key aspect to check for if you want to guarantee that your blackout blinds for schools and workplaces offer appropriate room darkening without becoming an expensive maintenance headache.
Check if the side channels of the blackout blind have a ‘zip’ fabric retention mechanism. When a blackout blind is properly placed, it produces a ‘air-lock’ between the window glazing and the interior.
Windows left open when the blinds are lowered, windows that leak air, or the opening of a door in an air-tight room can all cause the fabric on blackout blinds to be blown towards or away from the glazing.
A fabric retention mechanism, such as a ‘zip,’ prevents the fabric from being blown or sucked out of the side channels. Loose fabric indicates that the blind no longer provides enough light exclusion. If the blind is operated without the fabric in the side channels, it will most likely shred or become caught inside the roller cassette.
A fabric retention system, similar to a zipper on a jacket, consists of a plastic spline welded to the edge of the fabric. As the blind is lowered, this plastic spline glides within a groove in the side channel. This prevents lateral movement in the cloth.
The most typical problem with these blinds is ripped fabric coverings where the fabric has torn out of the side channels. Repair is expensive and intrusive since a blackout blind is installed on three sides of the window and sealed with mastic to provide maximum light exclusion. Replacing a cloth cover necessitates completely removing the blind from the window.
